Katy Perry on Russell Brand and her ‘Teenage Dream’

By Whitney Milam HollywoodNews.com: “California Gurls” is still dominating the airwaves, but Katy Perry’s new single “Teenage Dream” is catching up fast–and with the full new album to be released on Tuesday, Katy Perry is set to prove once and for all that she’s no two-hit-wonder. “After I Kissed a Girl, I knew it would take time to not look like a one-trick pony,” she tells USA Today. “This album is a perfect snapshot of where I am mentally and emotionally.” To Perry, “California Gurls” is “fun, but it’s not my opus.” With lyrics ranging from encouraging a woman to leave her abusive lover in “Pearl” to condemning a druggie ex in the goth-metalesque “Circle the Drain” to drawing comparisons to the biblical Queen Esther in “Who Am I Living For”, “Teenage Dream” is a ‘girl power’ album in the best sense of the phrase. “I relate to young women,” says Perry. “It’s the subject I can be most honest about. Lyrics are my focus, my forte, the black box of my heart. I don’t censor myself in songs.” Clearly, as anyone who’s heard “Peacock” can attest. “I’ve always been obsessed with birds,” she says in regard to the wordplay-filled new track. “Peacocks have all these colors, can’t fly and sound like cats. And the name! I love double-entendres and puns.” Perhaps that’s part of the attraction to her British actor/comedian fiance, Russell Brand, who inspired “Hummingbird Heart” and “Not Like the Movies”. Perry, who met Brand on the set of “Get Him to the Greek,” says, “You know when you know, and I just knew. He stopped my world. He’s someone I can count on, a life partner. And I’m wildly attracted to him. I do feel a little bit like Priscilla Presley. It’s been so lovely.” She adds, “Before we met, we were both open about our lives and viewpoints.
